We Welcome Edward McCrane, FPEM Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief
“Are you prepared for Hurricane Season?”
Edward McCrane was appointed as the Emergency Management Chief for Sarasota County on Friday, October 21st, 2005 while the county was in the 3 day error cone for Hurricane Wilma.
He is certified as a Florida Professional Emergency Manager (FPEM) and has extensive experience in emergency management, including his role as West Florida Area Coordinator for the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM). While with FDEM he served as state liaison for seven area emergency management directors. During this period he responded to Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne, Dennis, Katrina and Rita to provide state assistance to impacted counties.
Prior to going to work for the Division of Emergency Management, Ed was the Central Florida Military Support to Civil Authorities Coordinator for the Department of Military Affairs, Florida National Guard. In that role, he planned and coordinated military support operations during local, state and federal emergencies for 30 Florida counties. For his efforts he was awarded the Florida Distinguished Service Medal.
A U.S. Army career veteran of 22 years, his experience includes combat Operation “Just Cause” in Panama and working with the Haitian and Cuban mass migration in 1994 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 he was instrumental in training the Florida Army National Guard soldiers to work in Florida’s airports, seaports and nuclear power facilities. As a retired Master Sergeant Ed has served in many key leadership positions throughout his military career that have prepared him for his role in dealing with emergencies.
During his tenure for Sarasota County, Ed has served as the Incident Manager for TS Fay, the HiN1 Pandemic, Deep water Horizon Oil Spill, TS Isaac, TS Debby, TS Hermine, TS Matthew & Hurricane Irma, Tropical Storm Eta, Tropical Storm Elsa and has most recently been part of the Unified Command in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Ed has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from Ashford University.
Ed is married and has two children; Tyler (23) and Kaitlyn (32) who serves as the Community Affairs Director for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
